In general, people love fad diets because they promise extreme weight loss quickly. The problem is, they can also be unhealthy (hello, Atkins) or lead you to gain pounds back afterwards (we’re looking at you, juice detox). But as Hollywood stars have increasingly turned away from quick-fix diets in favor of healthier eating as a lifestyle, the keto diet has soared in popularity.

The keto, or ketogenic, diet is basically a high-fat, low-carb eating plan where the emphasis is on consuming healthy, clean fats that the body can process for energy. Think: olives, nuts, fish, coconut oil and avocado (all things that have been linked to other benefits including everything from brain health to smoother skin). “With a keto diet, the person is hoping to be in ketosis where their body is using stored fat,” NYC-based dietitian Keri Glassman tells Us. Put another way: “When the body reaches a ketogenic state, it turns to stored fat for energy.”
